U15 Girls Rugby Kent 34 v Essex 0 Five Thanet Wanderers played a big part in this resounding win played at Gillingham in stong winds. This local county derby was hotly contested, but Kent had the upper hand throughout. Hooker Phoebe Ellcock struggled with the wind at line outs, but was so significant at rucks and mauls Essex knew they were in a fight. The bigger Essex forwards were out scrummed and prop Louise Rubens got underneath the front row to dominate and her tackling was fearsome. Courtney McCleery was a safe pair of hands at full back and came into the line at just the right time to gain ground each time for the Kent girls. Milly Thurman-Newell won important line out, especially in the Essex 22 and carried the ball well. However, she was denied a try in the last quarter, when she spilled the ball over the line. When Mia Hillyard came on she added another ten points. Her running and footwork was outstanding and she was in the right place to receive spot on passes and shimmy over the Essex line - twice. All the girls played with passion and deserved their important win.
