Match Report: Thanet Wanderers Colts vs Ashford RFC
Final Colts Game of the Season
Thanet Wanderers Colts 33 – Ashford Colts 12
On a windy day up at the club, Thanet Wanderers Colts came together for their final match of the season—a friendly against Ashford RFC, kindly arranged in place of the cancelled tour. It was an emotional occasion, marking the last time our Under-18s would don the Colts colours before many move on to university or employment.
Playing into the wind in the first half, Thanet started strongly. The opening threat came from fullback Jem Harris, who broke through the Ashford defence, rounding the winger only to be held up over the line—a close call, but ruled no try by the referee.
Thanet didn’t have to wait long to open the scoring. A well-worked move saw Findlay Grounds burst through the centre to score under the posts. He quickly followed that up with a second try in similar fashion as Ashford struggled to contain his direct running. With conversions added, Thanet led 12–0.
Ashford responded with determination, capitalising on some slack defence to go over under the posts and close the gap to 12–7. But Thanet regained momentum with a smart tactical kick from Noah Bull into the corner, pressuring the Ashford fullback into a poor clearance. The ball fell to Zac O’Hendy in space, who gathered it cleanly and ran in under the posts for a 19–7 lead.
As Ashford's defence began to show more gaps, Thanet’s forwards started to dominate. A powerful drive saw Hubert cross the line, extending the lead to 26–7.
To their credit, Ashford refused to fold and managed another try, taking advantage of confusion in Thanet’s backfield and a delayed clearance kick. However, Thanet had the final say: a slick break in the centre by Alex Dyer set up Noah Bull, who showed excellent pace down the wing to score under the posts. The final whistle blew with Thanet victorious at 33–12.
Special mentions go to James for his outstanding tackle count at fly-half, and to forwards Harrison and Carl for their tireless work in the pack. The joint Men of the Match were Alex Dower in the centre and Findlay Grounds in the backline.
A fantastic final game for this talented group, and the coaching team would like to thank all players for their commitment this season—especially the boys who are now moving on. You’ve made the club proud.
