THANET WANDERERS VETS 61-5 CANTERBURY VETS
Wanderers are too strong for a weakened Canterbury side.
Three Wanderers ‘volunteered’ to don the yellow and black of Canterbury in order to produce a more balanced match. Ant Nye, Martin West, and James Whowell were all very useful additions to the visiting side.
Wanderers started well and the first try soon came from flanker Kris Finneran on his debut for the Vets and a second followed from speedy winger Jonty Stevens. The third came as wing forward Stephen ‘Buster’ Merrifield crossed the line. After seventeen minutes Danny Clement, another Vets debutant, intercepted to touch down under the posts. The fifth try of the first half was from the third member of the back row trio as Dave Lemon touched down following a lovely series of interchanges. All tries were converted and Wanderers led 35 – 0 at half time.
Canterbury scored a hard earned try to open the second half but a brace of tries from Peter Macaulay, another interception from Danny Clement and a nice individual try from Grant Dyer with three conversions gave Wanderers the victory.
Thanks to referee Jez Michael and to Canterbury for honouring the fixture that drew a good Sunday afternoon crowd. The next Vets fixture is scheduled for 5th January against Sevenoaks at home (Kick Off 2pm).
