Thanet Wanderers Ladies hosted Beccehamians Ladies on Sunday in a very special fixture marking an early Mother’s Day celebration while raising funds for the charity Tommy’s.
Before kick-off, the Thanet players were welcomed onto the pitch through a touching guard of honour formed by their children, celebrating the many mums within the squad and creating a memorable start to the afternoon.
The match kicked off with immediate intensity. Thanet quickly settled into their rhythm, with strong early carries and pressure at the breakdown. After a series of attacking phases and determined running through the middle, Maria Castellina broke through the defence to score the opening try. Tabs Raymonde added the conversion to give Thanet a confident start.
Thanet continued to apply pressure through strong defensive work and powerful carries from the forwards. Excellent tackling from Emily Williams and Shannon Cook helped keep Beccehamians pinned back, while the forwards worked tirelessly at the breakdown.
Thanet’s second try came following a sustained attacking move, with Fleur Moat finishing strongly after good support play through the backs. Tabs Raymonde again added the conversion to extend the lead to 14–0 at half time.
The second half resumed after a short delay while two players received medical attention, highlighting the physical nature of the contest.
Thanet continued to dominate territory and possession. A sharp break from Tabs Raymonde, showing excellent pace and footwork, saw her dive under the posts to score. She converted her own try to push the score to 21–0.
Beccehamians responded with determination and eventually found space out wide to score in the corner, narrowing the scoreline to 21–5.
Thanet responded immediately with renewed energy. Strong forward support and excellent recycling of the ball allowed Ella Thurman-Newell to power over the line, with Tabs Raymonde again adding the conversion.
As the match moved into the final stages, Thanet continued to press. After a strong run down the wing, Neave Evans crossed in the corner to seal the victory and complete a convincing 33–5 win.
While the scoreline reflected a strong Thanet performance, Beccehamians showed great determination and fight throughout the game.
Following the final whistle, the children returned to the pitch to present flowers to the players in a lovely moment marking the early Mother’s Day celebrations.
After the match, the club held a raffle and auction in support of Tommy’s, supporting coach Patrick Liddle and player Rebecca Hewitt, who are taking part in Tommy’s Walk for Hope this April after the heartbreaking loss of their baby to miscarriage at 10 weeks. Thanks to the generosity of everyone involved, just under £400 was raised for the charity.
On International Women’s Day, the afternoon perfectly captured the spirit of women’s rugby, resilience, support, and a powerful sense of sisterhood both on and off the pitch.
Final Score:
Thanet Wanderers Ladies 33 – 5 Beccehamians Ladies
