Wanderers rounded off their league season with a win away at Sidcup on Saturday. Although Thanet started the match in second place in the table it was the home side that began the game on the front foot. Sidcup were able to deny the visitors the ball in the first ten minutes of the game and were rewarded with the first try of the match.
This try was converted and Sidcup then extended their lead with an unconverted try after only 17 minutes had been played. The home side then allowed Thanet back into the game by not collecting the resulting kick off. Wanderers chased down the ball and Ben Cannon gathered it and grounded it over the line. Tom Walton’s conversion made the score 12- 7 to the hosts.
Sidcup scored their third try of the game with less than 30 minutes played. Thanet then took advantage of the penalties conceded by the home side with Lewis Downer finishing a move resulting from a lineout. Walton was again successful with the conversion closing the gap in the score to 19-14 to the hosts.
As the first half came to a close, Wanderers upped the tempo retaining possession and creating an opportunity which was snapped up by Tom Walton who levelled up the game at 19-19.
The second half started slowly with neither side able to make any inroads to break the deadlock. Although the first opportunity to score came Wanderers way they conceded a penalty for accidental offside allowing Sidcup to clear their lines.
It took until the 67th minute before Thanet asserted their authority when Harrison Quittenden collected a kicked to score Thanet’s fourth and bonus point try. The last ten minutes of the game saw possession seesaw between the two sides, but Wanderers again took charge to enable Downer to score his second try of the game.
The final score saw Thanet victorious with a 31-19 win as Sidcup had been unable to break Wanderers resolve throughout the second half. The only downside to Wanderers win was a yellow card shown to Lenny Brown as the game came towards its end.
Thanet finished the season second in the table and now await news from Kent RFU as to whether they remain in this league or are promoted.
A very successful season saw five of their players in the top ten try scorers in the league. Tom Walton finished top point scorer across the league with Ben Cannon also in the top ten places.
The players, trainers and supporters all look forward to starting next season from a positive position.
