A seven try haul for Thanet at Old Alleynians kept the team second in the league table. Wanderers took the lead straight from the kick off when Tom Walton made a break and a timely pass to Marius Thompson who scored out wide. The conversion attempt failed, but Thanet were on the board 5-0. The hosts tried to respond, but were penalised for an accidental offside which allowed Thanet to clear their line. Thompson scored his second try of the game when he made an interception and sprinted down the touchline to score. The successful conversion by Walton gave Thanet a 12- 0 lead.
The hosts then caught Thanet on the back foot and scored their first try of the match, easily cutting through Thanet’s defence to reduce the scoreline to 12-5. Thanet then made a number off attacking moves but were judged to be held up over the line. As the half enter its last five-minute Ben Cannon gathered the ball from the base of the scrum to score Thanet’s third try. Walton was again successful with his conversion attempt and the teams turned around with Thanet leading 19-5.
Wanderers started the second half positively, but it was Old Alleynians who created the space to score against the run of play, cutting the lead to 19-10. From that moment on Wanderers took control of the game. Firstly, a well worked move between Henry Mirams and Tom Walton saw Walton score the bonus point try followed by the conversion which restored the points gap to 26-10.
Adam Harrison took his opportunity to score the next try after good support work in the build-up and the conversion by Walton extended the lead to 33-10. Thanet’s next score followed when Walton received the ball as a result of an overthrow at an Old Alleynians line out to touchdown under the posts. He duly converted his own score to extend Wanderers lead to 40-10. Deep into added time at the end of the match, Gil Smith scored the last try of the game after Thanet had worked their way up the field from deep in their own half. The final conversion meant that the final score was 47-10.
This was an all-round good display by Wanderers in great playing conditions that allowed the game to flow. The only downside for the team was a yellow card for Cannon halfway through the second half, but Thanet weathered the man disadvantage to deny their hosts a scoring opportunity during that ten minute period.
