Wanderers Veterans win the Spitfire Golden Oldies Plate Final 46-7
Played on Maidstone RFC’s ground a depleted Wanderers side ran out comprehensive winners against Tunbridge Wells who also had selection problems.
Wanderers opened the scoring after just one minute with a try from Captain Elliott Stokes that was converted by Tom Longdon. Two excellent tries soon followed from left wing Jonty Stevens and Peter Macaulay scored in the last play of the half as he caught a desperate effort to clear the Wells lines before striding in to touch down for 22-0.
In the second half Jonty Stevens completed a notable hat trick. Wing forward Ant. Knight was well up in support of a flowing backs’ move to score his try before full back Tom Longdon also got on the score-sheet with a try to add to his two conversions in another masterful display. As Thanet pressed, a wayward Wells hand steered a Thanet pass into touch which did not please the referee who awarded Wanderers a penalty try. Just enough time left for Tunbridge Wells to end a sporting game with a consolation try to make the final score 46-7.
Congratulations to everyone who played, especially our guests from Deal and Maidstone. It was a terrific display from all who participated. The forwards were outstanding both at set pieces and in the loose gaining possession for the backs to build their incisive attacks that were a pleasure to watch. With so few subs available you all performed with style and way beyond the call of duty. Thank you for an enjoyable afternoon out.
