CANTERBURY U15s 26 V THANET WANDERERS U15s 39
The game on 6th January was a chance for the Thanet squad to test themselves and see how far they have developed so far this season. Early in the season they were well beaten at home by Canterbury and avenging this defeat was very much in the mind of the players.
Yet again Thanet did not play at Canterbury’s’ home ground but on the 4G surface at Simon Langton Boys School. The boys were a little disappointed to not be on one of the main Canterbury pitches but knuckled down and prepared well.
In what was a great spectacle of rugby for all the parents to enjoy Thanet raced into a 15-0 lead with three well taken tries involving some intelligent kicking and chasing and some strong defence. This put Canterbury under pressure and Thanet came away with the points after some strong work by the forwards and the backs using the space in front of them. Canterbury not to be out done then hit their stride and scored 3 unanswered tries mainly due to a lack of concentration by the Thanet pack taking the score to 19-15.
Thanet then realised they needed to compete at the breakdown and use the superior vision handling and speed of their back division to break Canterbury and scored another try making half time 20-19.
The second half Thanet got into their offloading game and several stunning breaks and passes followed up by some strong running resulted in some great rugby being played. The reward for this rugby was 3 more tries the players can really be proud of.
There is still plenty to work on and the guys need to train hard but scoring 7 tries against a Canterbury team they have never beaten is a real achievement and should inspire them to a better performance when they play Blackheath at St Peters on 10th February in the Kent Cup quarter final.
